You definately should…

… read the Bible

The Bible Some facts: Still the worlds best-selling book it’s accessible to over 90% of the global population in their own language (Siriano anyone?). The oldest parts are approximately 3500 years old, written by about 40 men over a period of more than a thousand years. It’s actually a collection of 66 books you shouldn’t fail to read — even if you’re a convinced atheist. It has been and continues to be the worlds most influencial book. It’s the one book all three great monotheistic religions accept at least in parts as of divine origin. It’s what inspired countless artists throughout the centuries up to ours. It’s really thick, alright, but if you haven’t read it, you shouldn’t consider yourself literate. It’s kind of weird, while today the Bible is most easily accessible (there are even versions online), people are less keen to read it. There were times when it meant death to read this book. So if you find a passage a bit hard or even dull, just imagine those brave men and women who risked their very lives just to read those words. If you still would have liked an easy start, I recommend beginning with the Gospels. Try different translations if you don’t understand a passage or ask someone who has studied the Bible. If you fail to see how what you are reading can be applied today, try this site. Last but not least, the Bible is the only book that actually claims itself to be of divine origin (no, the koran does not do so). So — there’s the chance you might actually read what God himself always wanted to tell you… and I bet there are some questions you’d like to have answered :)

… have a Mac

Apple LogoMy first Mac in summer 2005 changed the way I saw computers. I bought an iBook G4 and I just love it! It is running almost constantly and it hasn’t failed me ever. There’s just so many details that make working with a Mac so much more comfortable. It’s not just the looks — everything looks smooth and stylish on a Mac — it’s also the way all works together. To give you a starter you might want to watch the ads Apple has put on its homepage (in case you don’t already know them from television).

… intend to understand “Blade Runner”

Blade Runner! This movie is an absolute classic. I’m surprised how many people out there haven’t seen it. If you enjoy good movies let me tell you, you’ve definately missed something. Apart from the fact that it continues to be visually stunning although it already bears more than 20 years it has the quality to reveal something to think about even if you’ve already seen it a lot of times. What’s more, it’s been setting trends for a whole generation of science fiction movies, creating a vision of the future that hasn’t lost none of it’s dark appeal even now. If that hasn’t convinced you already take a look at the movie stills below or (if you speak German) check out this excellent Review on www.filmzentrale.de (Article in German). I recommend the Directors Cut, because it has the much more intriguing final scene and also the overall feel is a little rounder than in the first (studio-influenced) version.

The Siriano link to worldscriptures.org is really inspiring. Unfortunately it holds only translations until 1998 and have’nt been updated thereafter – anyway, it contains a lot of work. I figured out, that there was a german translation some years before the first english one. And centuries (!!) before someone tried to translate into russian. Despite the fact that Kyrill and Methodios invented the russian Alphabet to translate the holy scriptures …
